Your AI logo is not production ready

An AI generated logo is often delivered as an image, not production ready vector artwork. A PNG may print fine on a business card. But cut vinyl and many fabrication methods need clean vector paths, while embroidery needs separate digitising into a stitch file.

The image is not necessarily bad. It just is not finished.

That last row matters most. Every defect above is fixable. Having nothing to work from is the real gap.

Where it breaks, by production method

Printing

Colours shift. Something looks electric on a monitor and duller in print, because the printable colour range is different. Clients blame the printer. Often the colour never existed in print at all, and Adobe notes that certain colours, including some neons, have no CMYK equivalent.

There are also no defined spot colours, so every supplier guesses at your blue.

Gradients are fine for digital printing. They often need to be simplified or reworked for screen printing, embroidery, cut vinyl, engraving and single colour merchandise.

Signage

Depends on the method. A printer producing a large photographic banner can use a high resolution image.

But cut vinyl, acrylic letters, CNC cut panels, metal lettering, illuminated channel letters and laser engraving all need clean geometry. The supplier has to know exactly where a curve starts and ends, what gets cut, what is solid and what is transparent.

A fuzzy image a thousand pixels wide answers none of those questions.

Embroidery

This is the hardest test, and worth understanding properly.

An embroidered logo is not the file printed in thread. It has to be digitised into a stitch file containing stitch types, density, positions and machine instructions. Formats like DST and PES are machine instructions, not images.

What causes trouble: very small lettering, extremely thin lines, tiny gaps, fine gradients, soft shadows, many closely related colours, small isolated details, complicated intersections, very wide satin areas.

There are physical limits. Small satin lettering becomes too dense to stitch cleanly, and individual stitches have practical maximum lengths, which is why both fine detail and very wide solid areas cause problems.

Material matters too. A design that works on a flat woven shirt needs different density and compensation on a cap, a polo or stretch fabric.

Embroidery exposes whether your logo is actually simple enough to be a logo. If it cannot be stitched, that usually tells you something about the design rather than about the embroiderer.

Vector does not automatically mean correct

The obvious fix seems to be running the image through an automatic vectorising tool. It is not.

Auto Trace converts the defects along with the design. A crooked line becomes a crooked vector line. A soft edge becomes dozens of unnecessary anchor points. Bad lettering becomes bad vector lettering, now permanent and harder to fix.

Adobe’s own guidance says that for logos and exact geometric shapes, manual reconstruction is preferable, and that text should be identified and typeset rather than traced.

You can have a terrible vector file. Auto traced logos usually are one.

What a proper rebuild involves

Not tracing. Reconstruction.

  • Rebuild the geometry from scratch and fix the symmetry
  • Identify the typeface, or redraw the lettering properly, then fix the spacing
  • Simplify the details that will not survive production
  • Define the colours, in the formats print and screen each need
  • Build the single colour and reversed versions, then test it small

The output is not a nicer picture. It is a set of files any supplier in the world can work from.

When to start again instead

Sometimes you open the file and realise you are not fixing a logo, you are reverse engineering an illustration.

Start again when the typography is fundamentally broken, when the symbol has no clear geometry underneath the effects, or when it resembles an existing brand too closely.

At that point the honest advice is: keep the idea, throw away the artwork. Designing properly from the same concept is often cheaper than recreating every strange decision in the file.

One thing to check before you commit to it

Before you commit to a generated logo, check for similar existing trademarks. A similar mark can create problems when it produces a similar commercial impression for related goods or services.

So do that check before you put your logo on signage, packaging, uniforms and vehicles. It is an expensive thing to discover late.

AI logos, copyright and trademarks

Three checks you can run in five minutes

1. Make it tiny. Shrink it to business card, shirt chest and favicon size. Can you still recognise it and read it? If half the design disappears, you have a problem.

2. Make it one colour. Solid black, no gradient, no shadow, no texture. Does it still work? If not, you may have an illustration rather than a logo.

3. Ask for the master file. Can you send a printer an SVG, EPS, AI or vector PDF, and can someone select and edit the individual shapes? If all you have is a PNG, you do not yet have production artwork.

If your logo fails those checks

Two sensible options. Rebuild it, keeping the design you liked, reconstructed properly with the production versions built out. Or keep the concept and design it again from scratch.

  • Conversion action now appears four times instead of once at the end
  • Embroidery section left intact, per both audits
  • Third round: opening corrected so embroidery is described as needing digitising rather than vector paths, gradient claim softened from “break” to “need reworking”, unsupported claim about training data removed from the trademark section, and the master artwork table row made precise rather than absolute
  • Status: audited at 9 out of 10 with no failed gates. Ready to publish.
